Innovative Working Environment Standardization Roadmap

The objective of the German Innovative Working Environment Standardization Roadmap is to offer orientation in complex processes like designing complex working environments because they require beacons and guide posts, meaning standards and best practices. The standardization roadmap, developed by DIN, DKE and experts from economics, development, science and politics, analyzes the working environments of tomorrow and considers current research findings to demonstrate the areas in which the development of the working environment of the future can be driven forward by standardization.

The Innovative Working Environment Standardization Roadmap is currently only available in German.

Core topics of the standardization roadmap

The role of people is a focal point of the standardization roadmap – and with it the consideration of their physical and mental capacity. The working environment of the future shall prevent accidents and physical or mental injuries in all circumstances. In addition, human-technology interactions can decrease physical strain, for instance, by using robots or exoskeletons. If they are improperly designed, however, they can also result in the opposite. Standards contribute to health protection in work design, for example. In 28 recommendations for action, the standardization roadmap describes where there is need for standardization and where, for instance, content should be more specific.

The core and interdisciplinary topics of the Working Environment Standardization Roadmap include the impact of aspects of research, learning and competence development as well as technological developments on the activities of employees. In this context, the consideration of AI topics rounds out the picture.

Defined use cases are presented to illustrate the connection to the practical working environment. These are use cases that are already undergoing a transformation process or will change in the future.

The standardization roadmap, with its contents and recommendations, constitutes a relationship between standardization on the socio-political level and the company management level and provides important orientation for innovative working environments in the regulatory and normative environment.

About the objective and significance of the standardization roadmap

The objective of standardization roadmaps is to inform the stakeholders in the respective subject area of important basic requirements and assist them in meeting them. To achieve this, standardization roadmaps provide an overview of the respective technology topic, in this case innovative working environments, and the related standardization landscape and its organizational and content-related further development.

For innovative working environments, standardization roadmaps also allow for the systematic processing of convergent technologies (cross-committee complex topics) and act as a basis for discussion and exchange between the experts from various domains (e.g. automotive, IT, energy). They thus provide for better understanding because they provide all of the participants the same foundation and offer new committee members a subject-related introduction.
