Smart Solutions for Standards: more Speed, Quality and Efficiency for Innovations

Companies aim to accelerate the development of innovative ideas into globally successful products. One key approach is using smart solutions for standards for a far more efficient use of standards and a much quicker product development. Numerous initiatives are driving these new technologies forward worldwide. The German Commission for Electrotechnical, Electronic, and Information Technologies  (DKE), a member of the IEC, is one of the leading drivers globally. As host, it is putting smart solutions on the agenda of the General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IECGM) in November 2026 in Hamburg and demonstrating the enormous potential in concrete terms.

Standards are indispensable in product development. They create reproducibility and represent safety and quality while also requiring a lot of effort. Companies need to search extensive catalogues and transfer vast amounts of information from PDF files into production and development processes, as well as into software programs. Developers also need to constantly assess the relevance of standards for their work and interpret any requirements, all of which consumes valuable time.

IEC General Meeting 2026

The DKE is honored to host the annual event for international electrotechnical standardization. Under the title “Global Development. Driven by Standards.”, around 3,500 guests are expected in Hamburg in November 2026.

Automated application of Standards – improvements for Companies and Users

Smart solutions for standards offer a remedy. They provide machine-readable and -interpretable content to facilitate automated working with standards in the future. This allows significant savings in time and human resources. According to a study in Germany, a cost reduction of more than 60 percent regarding the application of standards is possible.

However, smart solutions are not only impressive because of their increased efficiency. Three additional significant advantages of the new technologies are:

  • Reliable use of artificial intelligence even in the development phase:
AI requires clearly structured data for reliable operation and avoidance of hallucinations. Smart solutions provide the ideal format for this purpose. In the future, companies will be able to use AI to very efficiently perform control and compliance testing and to optimize product ideas in accordance with the requirements of standards.
  • Comprehensive use of digital twins:
Already during development, the use of digital twins allows thorough testing – also regarding later operation and maintenance. As a prerequisite for this, digital twins must have access to consistent and current information, particularly to applicable standards. Smart solutions for standards provide exactly that.
  • Reducing errors:
The work with standards is prone to errors such as inadequate transfer of information, misinterpretation of terms and overlooking important contexts. Reliable smart solutions for standards significantly reduce the sources of error thereby increasing overall quality.

Standardization is essential for advancing key electrical engineering technologies in a safe, globally compatible, and sustainable manner. Smart solutions for standards accelerate processes and turbocharge innovation. The IEC GM 26 offers the opportunity for experiencing and discussing their application and laying the groundwork for their global rollout.

DKE

The world is going digital – and with it, standardisation. As the central organisation for electrotechnical standardisation in Germany, DKE is actively shaping this change. For us, digitalisation means more than just automating existing processes or using new technologies. It is a fundamental transformation process that is redefining the way we work, our products and our role in the standardisation ecosystem.
